Age-Related Issues:
Too old for rhinoplasty? How about too young? Children, teenagers, and the elderly each have their own special considerations.

The Elderly

Assuming the patient is in good health and has realistic expectations, there is no age that is too old for a rhinoplasty. Nevertheless, most rhinoplasties are performed on patients in their 20’s and 30’s. Fewer people in their 40’s and 50’s desire primary rhinoplasty as much as they request revision rhinoplasty or improvement in their aging eyelids and neck. Nevertheless, there are those in their 40’s and 50's who always wanted a rhinoplasty when they were younger and choose to have one later in life.

Youths

The ideal age to have a rhinoplasty is after the patient's nose has completed growing. This occurs in females after the age of 16 and after the age of 19 for males. Another good indicator of nasal growth is the patients' height compared to their parents. If the patient is as tall as the their tallest parent, then they are probably finished growing and so has their nose.

The problem with operating on patients earlier than their ideal age is that the nose will continue to grow in an unpredictable fashion. So, despite creating a balanced nose after the rhinoplasty, the continued nasal growth destroys the proportions that were created. Furthermore, while each patient has to be evaluated independently, younger patients are less mature and may not be ready to deal with the psychological impact of cosmetic surgery.
