Pre- and Post-Operative Instructions for Your Surgery
Facial Plastic Surgery - Eyelid Surgery

Please read and familiarize yourself with these instructions both BEFORE and AFTER surgery. By following them carefully you will assist in obtaining the best possible result. If questions arise, do not hesitate to contact me or my office to discuss your questions at any time. Take this list with you to the hospital and begin observing these directions on the day of your surgery.

Preparing for Facial Plastic Surgery

	Pre-Surgical Testing (PST): Arrange for a PST date one week prior to surgery. The number at NYU is 212-263-5985. The number at the Center for Specialty Care if 212-452-5160. If your surgery is at the Fifth Avenue Surgery Center, we will help you make arrangements with your internist's office for testing.
	Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, etc.) or any drugs containing these compounds, or vitamin E over and above what is already in a multivitamin, for two weeks prior to surgery.
	Refrain from smoking two weeks before and two weeks after surgery.
	Avoid sun damage two weeks prior to surgery.
	Purchase two 2-pound frozen bags of peas. You will use these as ice bags postoperatively!
	Do not eat or drink anything, including water, after midnight the night before your surgery.
	Arrange for someone to take you home from the hospital. You will not be allowed to leave alone.

Day of Surgery

	Wear clothing that fastens in the front or back. Avoid slipover sweaters, T-shirts and turtlenecks.
	Do not eat or drink anything, including water, the morning of your surgery.
	Leave your valuables at home; do not wear jewelry.
	Do not wear any facial or eye make-up, or nail polish.
	You may wear your glasses; do not wear contact lenses.
	If you wear dentures, keep them in.

Post-Operative Care

	Keep bandages on until you are instructed to remove them or we do so in the office.
	Avoid foods that require prolonged chewing. Otherwise, your diet has no restrictions.
	Avoid extreme physical activity. Obtain more rest than you usually get and avoid exertion, including athletic activities and intercourse. Do not: bend, strain, or lift heavy objects for three weeks.
	You may wash your face - carefully avoid the dressing.
	Absolutely avoid sun or sun lamps for 6 weeks after surgery; heat may cause nose to swell.
	Don't be concerned if, following removal of dressing, the nose, eyes and upper lip show some swelling and discoloration - this usually clears in two weeks. In certain patients it may require 6 months for all swelling to completely subside.
	Take only medications prescribed by your doctor.
	Contact lenses may be worn the day after surgery.
	Makeup may be used as soon as the bandages are removed. To cover discoloration, you may use ERASE by Max Factor. We also have cover up in the office if you would like.
