Liposuction Risks & Complications

All surgery carries some degree of risk. Be sure to talk with
your doctor about the specific risks and complications associated with your liposuction procedure. Because there are certain factors which can increase your risk of complications, inform your doctor of any medical conditions that you have, if you smoke, if you are on any medications, and if you have had any previous surgeries on or near the site being treated. By choosing a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon and carefully following his or her instructions before and after surgery you can greatly reduce your risks.

Some of the risks associated with liposuction include the following:

  • asymmetry
  • bagginess or rippling of the skin
  • blood clots
  • delayed wound healing
  • excessive fluid loss leading to shock
  • fluid retention
  • pigmentation changes
  • need for additional surgery
  • numbness
  • skin injury
  • unfavorable drug reactions

Along with the above risks, there are risks specific to the newer techniques, including the risk of thermal burn injury with UAL and the risks of fluid collection in the lungs and lidocaine toxicity with the tumescent technique.
