Liposuction Surgeon

Choosing a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon is one of the most important decisions the liposuction patient will have to make, and it is a decision which should not be taken lightly. Liposuction is considered a relatively safe cosmetic procedure, but it is surgery nonetheless. Below are important questions that you should ask any potential surgeon:

  1. Is the surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery? You can verify a doctor’s certification by contacting the American Board of Medical Specialties at 800-776-2378 or 866-275-2267.
  2. Does the surgeon have privileges at an accredited hospital to perform liposuction? 50% of cosmetic procedures are not performed in a hospital. Nevertheless, when a doctor has privileges to perform surgery at an accredited hospital, it is a good indication that the doctor is qualified and has the necessary training to be accepted by that hospital.
  3. Does the surgeon have any special training in liposuction?
  4. How long has the surgeon been performing liposuction?
  5. Is liposuction a major portion of the surgeon's practice?
  6. How many liposuction procedures does the surgeon perform annually?
  7. Does the surgeon have before and after photos for you to review of previous liposuction patients?
  8. What state(s) is the surgeon licensed to practice surgery in?
  9. What is the most common complication the surgeon encounters with liposuction and how does he/she deal with it?
  10. How often does the surgeon need to reoperate after liposuction and what is the most common type of reoperation performed?
