Tummy Tuck Recovery
Some tummy tuck procedures are performed as outpatient procedures, others as inpatient procedures, thus you may be released within several hours after surgery or several days. The abdomen is typically swollen right after surgery and you're likely to feel some discomfort. For the first few days, you'll likely need someone at home to assist you. During the first ten days after surgery, discomfort, as well as bruising, is common. Your doctor can prescribe pain medication to help with any discomfort that you experience. In addition, your doctor may recommend laxatives. Drains, if used, are typically removed within four to seven days after surgery, while stitches are usually removed within seven to ten days. Steristrips may be used for up to two weeks to help hold the wound closed and a supportive garment may need to be worn for up to six weeks. You should start moving around as soon as possible after surgery or as recommended by your surgeon to help speed the recovery process and reduce the risk of blood clots forming in the legs. Standing up straight and sitting up may, however, be difficult at first. Placing pillows or padding behind your back and knees while sitting can help. Once the drains are removed you should be able to shower, though you will need to avoid baths for at least two weeks. Each patient will recover in various ways and in varying lengths of time, though most patients find that they can go back to work within two to four weeks after surgery. Strenuous activity and heavy lifting will need to be avoided for about six to eight weeks. It can take a few months for all of the discomfort to clear up and the scars will fade over time.
