Pine bark extract improves skin aging signs

Filed under: Lasers & Skin Care — Dr. Philip J Miller @ 2:17 pm

Dusseldorf, Germany — Clinical trial results suggest that natural supplement Pycnogenol (Horphag Research), an antioxidant plant extract from the bark of the French maritime pine tree, improves skin hydration and elasticity in women.

The study, conducted by researchers at the Leibniz Research Institute for Environmental Medicine, in Dusseldorf, involved 20 healthy women ages 55 to 68 who were given 75 mg daily for 12 weeks. Skin fatigue, hydration and elasticity were assessed at the start and after six and 12 weeks. Also, biopsies were taken at the trial’s start and after 12 weeks to assess gene expression of HAS-1 and COL1A1 and COL1A2.

According to Medical News Today, the study found that Pycnogenol:

• Elevated COL1A1 by 29 percent and COL1A2 by 41 percent and increased hyaluronic acid production in the skin by 44 percent

• Enhanced skin elasticity by 25 percent and skin hydration by 8 percent

• Decreased skin fatigue considerably

• Reduced skin wrinkles by 3 percent and increased skin smoothness by 6 percent.

According to the study abstract, Pycnogenol supplementation was well-tolerated in all volunteers.

“This study provides skin-physiological and, for the first time, molecular evidence that Pycnogenol supplementation benefits human skin by increasing skin hydration and skin elasticity,” the authors concluded. “These effects are most likely due to an increased synthesis of extracellular matrix molecules such as hyaluronic acid and possibly collagen. Pycnogenol supplementation may thus be useful to counteract the clinical signs of skin aging.”

Rhinoplasty, Face Contouring & Eyelid Surgery popular across Asia

People from all different economic levels across Asia have been seeking more plastic surgery this year. South Korea is one of the major hubs for new wealthy elite in China and across the rest of Asia for people seeking plastic surgery. The most popular procedures preformed include Rhinoplasty, Face Contouring, and Eyelid Surgery to achieve a more western appearance. What’s interesting is this trend appears to be in conjunction with the overall effects of globalization and competitiveness in the job market. Just like many business executives in the US have turned to plastic surgery and non-invasive procedures (i.e. Botox, facial fillers, lasers, etc.), many youth across all of Asia have done the same. Tell us your thoughts and opinions on this trend by posting a comment on Facebook or tweeting us @DrPhilipMiller.

Unemployment Stats Relationship with Baby Boomer’s Receiving Plastic Surgery

Last month the mainstream media was talking about baby boomers receiving plastic surgery and the reason was because both men and women wanted to look as young as they felt. Although that statement still stands to be true, a recent reporter’s outreach to his following in Portland, Oregon sheds some additional reasoning as to why there has been a trend for baby boomers receiving plastic surgery; jobs. According to the AARP, on average, laid off workers 55 and over are unemployed for 25.2 weeks compared to younger workers who are unemployed for 20.6 weeks. Another reason is because traditional surgery is not the only option available for people interested in turning back the clock. Lasers, Botox, facial fillers, Pelleve’, & Ulthera are all popular non-surgical options being used today. And although results are not as long lasting as traditional surgery, they can be very effective and affordable.

Benefits of SmartLipo

SmartLipo is a new body sculpting procedure that uses a carefully calibrated laser to liquefy fat deposits through the top layers of a patient’s skin. The fat cells are ruptured by the laser which result in an oily liquid substance that is then remove through a tiny incision by the surgeon. Additionally, there is significantly less swelling, bruising, and bleeding resulting in less downtime than traditional liposuction. Ideal candidates are within 25 pounds of their ideal body weight, so it’s a great solution for stubborn body fat that you just can’t get rid of with exercise and diet. SmartLipo can be used in regions in the face, neck, arms, knees, back, breasts, and other areas of loose/flabby skin.
