Men, say “Good-Bye ‘Turkey-Neck’”

Earlier this year, new stats from the AAFPRS showed that more men have been receiving plastic surgery. The most popular procedure has been facelifts, up 14%. The reasons however, are vastly different and appear to be dependent on your age. Plastic Surgery overall has become much more acceptable and many men in their 40s and 50s feel they need to be more youthful for both their partners and to be competitive in the job market. And younger men, especially on Wall Street, view it as taking care of one self. For young Wall Street Botox falls somewhere in between getting your haircut and going for your routine dental exam.

The Faces of Wall Street are Changing

If you take a stroll down Wall Street these days, you’ll notice that all of the worry lines etched in from the brief pause on bonuses back in 2007 have mysteriously vanished. No, half of the work staff was not replaced, but rather the men of Wall Street are finding the benefits of the facelift and other facial plastic surgery procedures that rewind the clock and provide a fresh, youthful appearance. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery 14% of facelifts last year were from men. But, Botox is still one of the most popular treatments for men, with over 337,000 procedures performed last year on men.

The Men behind plastic surgery

Last week we spoke about the trend of men receiving plastic surgery from an article in the LA Times. This week, new statistics from the AAFPRS were released and illustrate this growing trend. Interestingly, the overall majority of men receiving plastic surgery are middle aged who are active and although they feel young and energetic, their physical appearance reflects the opposite. According to the AAFPRS Liposuction was up 7% in men this past year and Botox Injections up 9%. But one of the largest jumps in cosmetic surgery for men this year was in Facelifts, up 14%!

Plastic Surgery for Men

Plastic surgery is no longer just for women. In large cities such as Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago, there has been an increase of men having cosmetic procedures. Noninvasive procedures like Botox and fillers are very popular, but surgical procedures like Rhinoplasty and Liposuction are also very popular for men. A recent video from the LA Times, discusses this trend and how some men in Hollywood are more open to cosmetic procedures.

What’s your perceived age?

First impressions can last a lifetime, which is why your perceived age is so important. Although non-invasive procedures can definitely lower your perceived age, there is no substitute for the results that a traditional facelift can offer. In fact, a new study conducted in Kansas found that patients who have undergone a facelift rate themselves as looking an average of 12 years younger after surgery. Out of the 122 patients (82 women & 11 men), most also simultaneously had a forehead lift and/or eyelid surgery to compliment their results.
