Whenever a new and more effective technique is developed to aid plastic surgeons in providing better care while maintaining attractive results, it is an exciting thing. Once such advanced technique is microrhinoplasty. The former method of reducing a hump or bump on the nose with osteotomy is becoming a thing of the past with microrhinoplasty moving in. Dr. Miller has adopted this technique in appropriate candidates to replace the need to fracture the bones of the nose and reposition them.

Microrhinoplasty is a much less invasive procedure performed with the use of an air-powered microsaw to remove the bony hump layer by layer. Surgeons are able to have an added degree of precision that was not available before and are able to correct the flaw until the exact level of reduction needed is reached.

Rhinoplasty is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures performed, with hump reduction being at the top of the list of most requested nose corrections. Hump or bump reduction requires that the bone or cartilage creating the formation be removed. Many patients can benefit from the microrhinoplasty technique and will enjoy the several advantages it offers. Who wouldn’t prefer to be able to spend as little as 5 minutes in the surgeon’s chair with just local anesthesia? Osteotomy, on the other hand, requires general anesthesia and a good deal longer spent in surgery. Since the nasal bones do not need to be fractured microrhinoplasty, there are fewer risks of complications associated with osteotomy, such as inverted V deformity or “rocker” deformity. Patients also experience little, if any, pain and significantly less swelling and bruising. Additionally, recovery time is shortened.

The greatest benefit of all is, of course, the newly heighted confidence the patient will feel after his or her surgery. Facial harmony will result in a more eye-catching appearance, and in a good way.

Individuals who are looking to reduce a nasal hump and are interested in exploring their options should contact Dr. Philip Miller for a personal consultation at (212) 750-7100. Dr. Miller is one of the best facial plastic surgeons with offices located at 60 East 56th, Third Floor, New York, NY.

The revolutionary use of stem cells in medicine is now being hailed as the latest breakthrough in the ongoing battle against the natural aging process. Stem cells are unique in that they are literally the tabular rasa, or blank slate, in cellular biology. They are known as “undifferentiated” cells, meaning they have the potential to be transformed into other types of cells – a liver or heart cell, or a skin cell – or regenerate old or damaged tissue.

This is why stem cells are frequently viewed as the body’s natural fountain of youth.

The Stem Cell Facelift is a new facial cosmetic procedure utilizing adult stem cells harvested through liposuction from a patient’s own fat tissue. The fat stem cells are then separated out and comingled with stem cell growth factors, which activate and energize the stem cells. The mixture is then injected by a qualified physician into specific areas of the patient’s face to restore lost facial volume and a youthful appearance.

The technique promises a complete facial rejuvenation, and a growing number of patients are looking into this less invasive procedure with much hope and anticipation.
The Stem Cell Facelift does indeed hold promise because of its efficient use of the body’s own rejuvenation potential to regrow or replace tissue that is lost as a result of normal aging. The use of stem cells has had remarkable results in the treatment of spinal cord injuries, for example.

The advantages associated with the use of stem cells in facial cosmetic procedures, however, should be weighed against any potential risks as the technology is still in its infancy. In one extreme case, a patient who had the procedure went back to her plastic surgeon with bone shards growing inside her eyelids.

Stem cell technology in cosmetic surgery is an exciting development that still has a long way to grow. One, therefore, should not overlook other non-invasive procedures with proven track records of success, such as Botox and injectable fillers used to remove facial lines and wrinkles, as well as time-tested surgical procedures like the traditional facelift.

Dr. Philip Miller is a board certified facial plastic surgeon with offices located at 60 East 56th, Third Floor, New York, N.Y. Call (212) 750-7100 for a personal consultation.

Rhinoplasty for Men

A nose by any other name would smell as sweet. It makes no difference, then, whether you are a man or a woman or what kind of nose you have. Everyone’s nose has the same olfactory function, but not all noses are blessed with the same appealing shape or appearance.

In increasing numbers, men are turning to rhinoplasty to change the look of their nose but without fundamentally altering its masculine structure. This is where the cosmetic goals of men and women tend to diverge. When considering nose surgery, women are often looking for significant or dramatic results to achieve a more attractive and feminine appearance. The “male nose job,” by contrast, often has more specific goals in mind. A male patient may opt for nose surgery to remove a dorsal hump or to soften the appearance of a hooked or drooping nasal tip.

Change your Nose

Other male patients are looking to narrow the width of a “dominant” nose or reduce the overall size of the nose to balance out the face. Or they simply want to improve the overall shape of the nose but without dramatically changing its basic structure. Men, in sum, want a better looking nose that unmistakably says “me, mine, and man.” They don’t want results that appear feminine. In cases related less to aesthetics and more to function, men may undergo rhinoplasty to open blocked airways or repair a deviated septum.
Regardless of a patient’s gender, the techniques used in nasal surgery are the same and the risks and benefits are also the same. There is a slight risk of infection or nosebleeds following nose surgery, or a temporary loss of smell.

Many Men are Choosing Rhinoplasty

That many men are choosing rhinoplasty for a more satisfying appearance is reflected in the more than 240,000 individuals who underwent rhinoplasty in 2012, 25% of whom were male according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). No longer is there a stigma attached to male rhinoplasty. A good example is Iran, rated the “nose job capital of the world,” where some 200,000 people are having nasal corrective surgery each year. Many of these patients are men. In today’s unisex world there are no gender barriers in nasal surgery, just different cosmetic goals and objectives.

The Wonder Years can be the brutal years for many teenage girls and boys longing to fit in. In our youth we are taught never to judge a book by its cover or a person by the way he or she looks. The reality is that kids will break this cardinal rule as fast as they can change a music DVD: Susan’s ears are too big and stick out. Bobby’s nose is too long and it has a weird bump on the bridge.

Social bullying and rejection often are the result. Although the trend appears to be on the decline, tens of thousands of teens each year are having cosmetic surgery. They want to feel better about themselves and that often means having a “normal” looking nose as defined by their peer group. Or they want to fit in, and that means getting rid of the acne scars. They want to put an end to the constant bullying in the hallways.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reported that nearly 219,000 cosmetic plastic surgery procedures were performed on patients aged 13-19 in 2010. Rhinoplasty and otoplasty were among the top procedures performed in this age group. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), cosmetic ear surgery was the most common procedure among teens in 2010.

Many of these teens undoubtedly had the procedure for purely social reasons – the self-esteem that comes with feeling that one is an accepted part of the larger peer group. While the motive is understandable, many plastic surgeons question whether such procedures are advisable for cosmetic reasons for people of such a tender age. Rhinoplasty, for example, is a complicated surgical procedure that carries risks even for adults. It’s no different with teens.

Moreover, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration prohibits breast augmentation surgery for patients under the age of 18. Most surgeons won’t do liposuction on a patient younger than 17. This is not to say that cosmetic procedures such as rhinoplasty should be off limits to teens. There are many instances where the procedure is medically necessary, as in the case of a deviated septum.

Everyone wants to fit in. And as beauty is only skin deep, teens need to learn that self-acceptance comes from within. If your teenage son or daughter is considering cosmetic facial surgery or rhinoplasty, it’s important to consult first with a qualified cosmetic surgeon.

Dusseldorf, Germany — Clinical trial results suggest that natural supplement Pycnogenol (Horphag Research), an antioxidant plant extract from the bark of the French maritime pine tree, improves skin hydration and elasticity in women.

The study, conducted by researchers at the Leibniz Research Institute for Environmental Medicine, in Dusseldorf, involved 20 healthy women ages 55 to 68 who were given 75 mg daily for 12 weeks. Skin fatigue, hydration and elasticity were assessed at the start and after six and 12 weeks. Also, biopsies were taken at the trial’s start and after 12 weeks to assess gene expression of HAS-1 and COL1A1 and COL1A2.

According to Medical News Today, the study found that Pycnogenol:

Elevated COL1A1 by 29 percent and COL1A2 by 41 percent and increased hyaluronic acid production in the skin by 44 percent

Enhanced skin elasticity by 25 percent and skin hydration by 8 percent

Decreased skin fatigue considerably

Reduced skin wrinkles by 3 percent and increased skin smoothness by 6 percent.

According to the study abstract, Pycnogenol supplementation was well-tolerated in all volunteers.

“This study provides skin-physiological and, for the first time, molecular evidence that Pycnogenol supplementation benefits human skin by increasing skin hydration and skin elasticity,” the authors concluded. “These effects are most likely due to an increased synthesis of extracellular matrix molecules such as hyaluronic acid and possibly collagen. Pycnogenol supplementation may thus be useful to counteract the clinical signs of skin aging.”

Many people find themselves at the pinnacle of success, with all the material belongings they’ve dreamed about and the lives they’ve always wanted and yet they find they are still not satisfied with something that may seem trivial to those readers who are blessed with symmetrical and attractive facial features. Rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job is still one of the fastest growing and most popular surgeries on the market.

While some are blessed and privileged to be happy with the nose they were born with, others feel endlessly cursed by the nose they were born into. The nose job owes much of it’s popularity to the fact that a person’s nose is the first thing that enters a room, it is the part of us closest to the person with whom we speak and it is where we are told to look when we want to make good eye contact. A symmetric or asymmetric nose can leave a long lasting impression much to the vexation or the elation of the person living behind it. Fortunately for those of us who are not 100% pleased with our own nose, surgical advances allow us to overcome genetics in hopes of representing physically the confidence we feel inside. With the helping hands of a skilled surgeon we can feel more comfortable in our own skin.

A good surgeon who has solid experience and a good reputation, like Dr. Philip J. Miller in New York, will do more than just tell you what he plans to do. A good surgeon will listen carefully to your wishes and concerns, and will make sure you understand what is possible in your specific situation, helping you form realistic expectations. If you are considering a nose job an attentive and skilled surgeon is paramount in order to achieve the results you hope for. Finding the best surgeon is perhaps the most important part of realizing the results you want for your nose.

When you hear the term rhinoplasty what comes to mind? Twenty-five years ago, most people were not familiar with the procedure. However, today in most urban centers with large populations, such as New York, nearly everyone knows what a rhinoplasty is. Those who are not familiar with the term will surely be familiar with the colloquial term – nose job.

Rhinoplasty is a blanket term for most procedures on the nose, which can address aesthetic issues like size, shape, length, width, symmetry, nostril shape, as well as functional issues such as speaking, and breathing difficulties. These procedures can be done in a number of ways and can be addressed differently by different surgeons.

Rhinoplasty is one of the most common and sought after cosmetic procedures on the market. Not only do hundreds of thousands of Americans undergo the procedure annually, but also an enormous number of foreigners travel to American soil seeking rhinoplasty in cities like New York and Los Angeles in a market that sets the global standard in plastic surgery.

Rhinoplasty in America has developed from what was once a standard procedure producing standard results, into an organic procedure that can be custom tailored to suit each individual’s desires with unbelievably accurate results. Because the procedure is now so common, the number of skilled surgeons has continued to grow and the methods continue to become more and more innovative and produce even better results because patients have come to expect and demand those results.

Rhinoplasty today is a far cry from the cookie cutter procedure it once was. And that is indeed fortunate since so many of us are now seeking improvement on the nose nature provided us.
