Hello, my name is Dr. Philip Miller; I am a board certified facial plastic surgeon practicing in Manhattan, New York. I’d like to talk to you today about the words Board Certified and what they mean. Board certification, board certified more or less assures you that you’re dealing with an expert in the field. How does one become board certified? Well there are medical establishments, medical organizations that are boards, The American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery for example is responsible for certifying facial plastic surgeons. In order to be board certified one must pass a written and oral examination. One must submit many different surgical cases that have been performed. They are reviewed and the board determines whether or not the appropriate surgery was performed. Letters of recommendation have to be sent. And there are many other different criteria that a particular surgeon has to submit to as well as pass in order to be called board certified. Now it’s important also to know that every field of medicine has there own board. There is The American Board of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, there is the American Board of Plastic Surgery, there is the American board of Facial Plastic Surgery. I am doubly board certified in both Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery which is often termed ENT. As well as the American Board of Facial Plastic Surgery, so I am as they call double board certified. It’s important again in choosing your facial plastic surgeon to make sure that they are board certified which can guarantee qualifications and an area level of expertise in the field of facial plastic surgery.
