Considering a Revision Rhinoplasty in NYC
Although patients undergo nasal surgery with the expectation that their appearance will be improved upon, unfortunately that is not always the case. Whether it be due to surgeons who are using outdated, ineffective techniques or complications that arise during the procedure or healing process, some patients end up dissatisfied with a rhinoplasty surgery they thought would increase their confidence.

Since nose surgery is a highly complex procedure, it can be difficult to get the results perfect the first time. The appearance and functionality of the nose are closely connected. When a nose job is performed to develop balance in the face by enhancing the size and shape, it can disrupt the ability to breathe through the nasal cavity properly. Conversely, improvements in breathing may cause a disturbance in the way the nose looks.
A wide variety of reasons may cause you to be discontented with a previous rhinoplasty procedure. Perhaps the bone in your nose has formed a bump or depression since surgery, or maybe excess scar tissue has developed. Revision rhinoplasty can correct these issues among others. The procedure can also address surgical results that have caused difficulty with nasal breathing, such as a deviated septum or nasal valve collapse.

Revision Rhinoplasty: The Surgery
Revision rhinoplasty is performed with either an open or closed approach, much like a primary rhinoplasty. When using the closed approach, minimal additional scarring will occur since the incision is place inside the nose. When correcting results of prior surgeries it may be necessary to use an open approach with the incision placed across the skin between the nostrils. This open technique allows for better visibility for the surgeon to see and access the problems. The specific techniques that will be used are dependent on the aim of your surgery. For example, bone and cartilage are removed when treating a hump that has formed. If a depression is in need of raising, cartilage grafts will be needed to build it up.
In instances where minor fixes are being done, local anesthesia may be able to be used. General anesthesia or sedation is typically used in revision rhinoplasty however. At the close of the surgery, a protective splint will be placed over your nose. It can be removed in a week. If splints were placed around the septum for protection they will also be removed. Sutures will be taken out after several days.

Revision Rhinoplasty: The Recovery
You may experience some difficulty breathing during the 1-2 week recovery period. This is largely in part due to swelling. Swelling and bruising typically occurs around the eyes as well. If you experience pain or discomfort, it can be controlled by prescribed medication; however, most individuals experience very little to no pain following rhinoplasty. Normal activity is resumed by most patients around 10 days, though exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for about 3 weeks. Contact sports, or any activity that could cause trauma to the nose, should be avoided until after the bones have fully healed in 6 weeks.
