New York City Bridges
Part of what gives New York City its character is its unique geography. Comprised of five boroughs scattered across islands, New York is home to over 2000 bridges and tunnels traversing the city. Some of these bridges don’t just connect the boroughs but have achieved landmark status, playing a significant role in NYC’s history and culture.
The Brooklyn Bridge
An emblem of NYC, The Brooklyn Bridge is perhaps, the city’s most beloved landmark. A hybrid cable-stayed and suspension bridge, The Brooklyn Bridge spans the East River between Manhattan and Brooklyn. Opened in 1883, it was not only the first fixed crossing across the East River but also the longest suspension bridge in the world at that time.
This Neo-Gothic structure has become a major tourist attraction since its opening and has become an icon of the Big Apple –it is one of the city’s most photographed bridges and a location frequently used in films. Walking across the bridge is also, most often than not, on the itinerary of anyone visiting New York. It has been designated a National Historic Landmark, a New York City landmark, and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
The Manhattan Bridge
Running almost parallel to the Brooklyn Bridge, The Manhattan Bridge is a suspension bridge that crosses the East River, connecting Lower Manhattan at Canal Street with Downtown Brooklyn at the Flatbush Avenue Extension. There’s even a neighborhood named after the bridge. DUMBO is an acronym for “Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass” and is a charming neighborhood with cobblestone streets and small businesses that make it a charming location.
The Manhattan bridge features an innovative design, being the first suspension bridge to utilize engineer Josef Melan’s deflection theory for deck stiffening that led to the first use of a lightly-webbed weight-saving truss for its construction. The Manhattan Bridge, therefore, is considered a pioneer in modern suspension bridges, serving as the standard for many innovative spans built in the first half of the 20th century.
The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge
A double-decked suspension bridge, The Verrazzano-Narrows connects Staten Island and Brooklyn. It is named after Giovanni da Verrazzano, the first documented European explorer to enter New York Harbor and the Hudson River in 1524.
At its grand opening in 1964, the Verrazano was the longest suspension bridge in the world (it now ranks 13th) but remains the longest main span, running over two miles from end to end. It spans the Narrows, a body of water connecting the Upper New York Bay with Lower New York Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. It is the only fixed crossing of the Narrows and carries 13 lanes of Interstate 278, with 7 lanes on the upper level and 6 on the lower level.
