Wall Street

Wall Street is so much more than a street pulsating with the frenzied energy New York City’s Financial District is known for, but it’s also a vital piece of America’s History and a cultural hub packed with tourist attractions.

About Wall Street

Wall Street got its name from a literal, physical wall built in 1653 to defend Dutch colonists from the British and Native Americans. Eventually, the Dutch colony outgrew the wall, which was taken down in 1699. The name, however, stuck. With its proximity to the city’s ports, the Wall Street area became a bustling street bazaar and the center of trade in the 1700s. Traders formalized the rules and created the New York Stock Exchange. Wall Street eventually became one of the most significant financial institutions in the world. While money, obviously, is influential to Wall Street, there are other things that make the Financial District special — sites, good food, and activities that will keep anyone entertained.

Where to Eat in Wall Street

Even the busiest traders, bankers, and investors have to eat. And the plethora of options around Wall Street makes eating a true pleasure.

Opened in 1994 by restaurateur Danny Meyer, Gramercy Tavern has since earned nine James Beard Awards. Diners have fallen in love with its contemporary American cuisine, matched with warm hospitality. Celebrating ingredients from local farms, the restaurant’s seasonal menu includes Grilled Summer Squash and Duck Meatloaf.

Old Homestead Steakhouse has been serving some of the city’s best steaks since 1868. Their menu features 13 different steak cuts and sizes, including Japanese A5 grade Wagyu. Diners also enjoy their steak accompaniments of cold seafood appetizers, creamed spinach, and an extensive wine list.

What to Do

An area as frenetic as Wall Street will, of course, be saturated with fun things to see and do.

A tour of Wall Street would be incomplete without visiting the New York Stock Exchange. While visitors cannot go inside the building, the historical site is still impressive to see in person. Take some photos of the landmark or listen for the opening bell, which is rung at 9:30 am every weekday.

A few minutes from Wall Street is Battery Park –home to Castle Clinton (sandstone war fort) and one of the best views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Visitors are encouraged to come during sunset when they can take stunning photos of Lady Liberty and New York Harbor.

The South Street Seaport is right on the Financial District neighborhood’s edge. It’s a vibrant area where visitors can grab a bite from Fulton’s farmer’s market, listen to live music, tour the South Street Seaport Museum, or simply relax by the water.
