Most cosmetic surgical procedures vary in the techniques the surgeon uses. A nose job is no exception to this rule. Rhinoplasty is not one single procedure. Different types of rhinoplasty can address cosmetic concerns, breathing concerns, nasal tip shape, previous surgical results, or subtle contour irregularities.

There are six different types of rhinoplasty:

  • Open rhinoplasty
  • Closed rhinoplasty
  • Tip plasty (nose tip rhinoplasty)
  • Septorhinoplasty
  • Revision rhinoplasty
  • Liquid rhinoplasty

More specialized types of nose surgeries are female and male rhinoplasty, ethnic rhinoplasty, teen rhinoplasty, and micro-rhinoplasty.

What Are The Different Types of Nose Jobs?

The main types of rhinoplasty include open rhinoplasty, closed rhinoplasty, tip plasty, septorhinoplasty, revision rhinoplasty, and liquid rhinoplasty. Each option is designed for different patient goals, from reshaping the bridge or tip of the nose to improving breathing or refining the results of a previous surgery.

six types of nose jobs

Open Rhinoplasty for More Detailed Nose Reshaping

During an open rhinoplasty, the surgeon creates a small Z-shaped incision on the underside of your nose between the nostrils. The open approach allows the doctor to make more accurate and precise changes to the shape of your nose. Open rhinoplasty leaves a tiny incision, but with proper care, the scar fades quickly.

Open rhinoplasty is often recommended when a patient needs more detailed structural changes or more significant reshaping. Because the surgeon has greater visibility of the nasal framework, this approach can be helpful for complex cosmetic or functional concerns.

Closed Rhinoplasty for Minor Nose Refinements

With closed rhinoplasty, the surgeon creates incisions inside of your nose without affecting the skin. The main disadvantage of this approach is the limited visibility of the bone, cartilage, and tissue. However, this type of nose job causes less swelling than open rhinoplasty and can provide correction for minor imperfections.

Closed rhinoplasty may be a good option for patients who need smaller refinements and do not require extensive structural changes. Since the incisions are placed inside the nose, there is no visible external incision.

Tip Plasty for Nose Tip Rhinoplasty

During tip plasty surgery, the surgeon focuses on reshaping the tip of your nose. The procedure is less invasive and doesn’t involve intervention to the nasal bone. The recovery from this type of rhinoplasty is typically shorter than from the traditional nose job.

Tip plasty can help improve concerns such as a bulbous nasal tip, drooping tip, wide tip, or underdefined tip. This type of nose tip rhinoplasty is focused on creating a more refined nasal shape while preserving the rest of the nasal structure.

Septorhinoplasty for Breathing and Nose Shape

During septoplasty, the surgeon repositions your nasal septum to the middle of your nose. This procedure is also known as deviated septum rhinoplasty. After it’s healed, you will find it easier to breathe. Septoplasty alone rarely makes a difference in the external appearance of the nose.

Septorhinoplasty combines functional correction with cosmetic nose surgery. This option may be recommended for patients who want to improve nasal breathing while also refining the outside appearance of the nose. In other words, rhinoplasty can be combined with septoplasty to improve both form and function of the nose.

Revision Rhinoplasty After a Previous Nose Surgery

If you have already had a primary rhinoplasty and are unhappy with the results, you may undergo revision rhinoplasty. This procedure focuses on correcting cosmetic problems that were not corrected by the previous surgery or addressing functional issues that might have arisen after the first procedure.

Revision rhinoplasty is often more complex than the first rhinoplasty because the nasal structure may have scar tissue or previous surgical changes. The goal is to improve the appearance, function, or both, depending on the patient’s concerns.

Liquid Rhinoplasty for Subtle Nonsurgical Nose Contouring

For a liquid rhinoplasty, the surgeon utilizes dermal fillers to create a new nose shape, avoiding any stitches or incisions. Liquid filler cannot make a nose look smaller but can address minor indentations or asymmetries without the need for surgical intervention.

Liquid rhinoplasty is a nonsurgical option for patients who want subtle changes without surgery. However, it cannot correct breathing issues, reduce nasal size, or create the same level of change as surgical rhinoplasty.

Other Specialized Types of Rhinoplasty

Some patients may benefit from a more specialized rhinoplasty approach based on their age, anatomy, background, or aesthetic goals. These may include female rhinoplasty, male rhinoplasty, ethnic rhinoplasty, teen rhinoplasty, and micro rhinoplasty. Each approach considers the patient’s individual nasal structure while helping create results that look natural for their face.

How to Choose the Right Type of Rhinoplasty

The best type of rhinoplasty depends on your nasal anatomy, breathing function, cosmetic goals, and whether you have had previous nose surgery. For some patients, the goal is to refine the bridge, tip, or overall nose shape. For others, the priority may be improving airflow, correcting a deviated septum, or addressing concerns from a previous procedure.

During a consultation, Dr. Miller can evaluate your concerns and explain which rhinoplasty approach may be most appropriate for your needs.
