Eyes Wide Open

Our face is one of the first physical features people are drawn to, but our eyes communicate volumes about our personality, feelings, and emotions. Overtime, however, the quality of our skin around our eyes changes as we lose collagen and volume from natural aging. Sometimes shadows can even be created by blood vessels behind thinning skin around the eyes that can cause us to look aged and tired. Blepharoplasty is an option to cosmetically correct some of these problems, but other solutions include Botox around the eyes (to remove fine lines), and even something as simple as wearing sunglasses outside can help slow down natural aging and protect your eyes.

Don’t forget the lower lids…

When we think of eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) we often just think of the raising the brows and removing any puffiness underneath the upper lids. But, cosmetic surgery on the lower lids can also make a major impact on your overall youthful appearance. Overtime, the muscles and fat tissue under the lower lids can begin to sag and give an aged appearance. The overall goal with cosmetic surgery on the lower lids is to reposition the fat in a way that leads to a more balanced look.

Optimize your results

Cosmetic surgery and anti-aging has changed over the years; over the past centuries for that matter (as we’ve explored in previous posts). Most recently, with the advancement in non-surgical techniques, it is becoming more common to have multiple procedures (surgical & non) combined during surgery. This 50 year old woman on CBS’ the Early Show is a prime example where a patient has combined a facelift & blepharoplasty with Botox and some laser treatments to optimize her results. Her before & after, as we’ve seen with many of our patients who have taken this route, is great and illustrates how this technique can significantly reduce your perceived age.

Instant Youth…?

Want to look younger now? As in right now? A new product called “Eye Secrets” markets their eye strips as a “quick fix solution for sags and bags”. The manufacturer says the strips work by gently pushing back the eyelid and excess skin above the eye towards the back of the socket. It sounds like someone with scotch tape could do the same thing (maybe that is where this idea came from). This definitely requires someone with a steady hand and an eye for detail. Although conceptually this sounds interesting, an investment in a blepharoplasty (i.e. an eyelid lift) offers much more natural and longer lasting results.
