Uptown Manhattan

Comprising Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Central Park, and Upper Manhattan, Uptown Manhattan may not be considered a major NYC tourist center, but the perfect blend of modern comforts, green spaces, a vibrant art scene, and just the right amount of interesting attractions give the area a charm of its own.

History of Uptown Manhattan

Towards the end of the 19th century, the IRT Ninth Avenue Line and other elevated railroads increased mobility among New Yorkers, bringing people to Upper Manhattan and eventually giving locals better access to shopping, restaurants, and amusements to nearby areas. While the neighborhood wasn’t immediately influenced by the gentrification of its surrounding boroughs until the late 20th century, the city’s rapidly expanding population helped influence its transformation, leading to a boost in commercialism and its real estate market, as well as contributing to the changing architectural landscape of New York.

Dining in Uptown Manhattan

Eating well is easy in Uptown Manhattan. Whatever one’s price point, exciting restaurants that pepper the neighborhood make dining fun, relaxing, or creative.

From its humble beginnings as a seafood shack in Prince Edward Island, Flex Mussels is now a staple Upper Manhattan eatery where its mussel-forward menu treats diners to light, flavorful, and shareable food. Seafood enthusiasts don’t have to settle for just steamed mussels when they can select from twenty-three different preparations of the bivalve mollusks, including a Mexican variety in which mussels are cooked in chipotle broth and topped with calamari and chorizo.

With its industrial décor, exposed brick walls, and big leather booths, plus an extensive spirits collection, The Ribbon is like a modern tavern offering diners a warm and inviting atmosphere while serving a wide variety of American classics with a twist. From brunch favorites such as chicken & waffles and challah French toast to vegetable risotto and lobster & shrimp curry, their dishes can satisfy any craving.

JoJo is a casual, neighborhood-friendly restaurant serving farm-to-table dishes that celebrate local and organic ingredients. Housed in a duplex townhouse, the fresh and modern eatery serves brunch dishes like organic frittata with asparagus, shiitake mushrooms, and goat cheese and buttermilk pancakes with market berries. And for dinner, entrées include Maine lobster roasted in the shell with herb butter and charred duck breast with strawberry and mustard seed pickles served with house cocktails.

Attractions

With a healthy dose of world-famous museums, landmarks, tours, and attractions, there’s no shortage of activities for the culture vultures in Uptown Manhattan.

America’s first-ever man-made public park, Central Park features 843-acres of lush green spaces that offer a refuge from the city’s hustle and bustle. Visitors can check out the pristine lawns, flower beds, and jetted fountains at the Conservatory Garden, go on a rowing adventure, or explore the exhibits at Central Park Zoo.

Museum Mile is located in Uptown Manhattan, and this means quick access to some of the world’s greatest cultural art museums. The American Museum of Natural History, for instance, features changing exhibits that put the spotlight on the history and development of Earth’s multiple species through interactive displays and lively artifacts.

The Cloisters Museum and Gardens in Fort Tryon Park is a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art that houses medieval art and architecture collections with a focus on Romanesque and Gothic periods.

A palace-cum-industrial-shed, the Park Avenue Armory is a historic landmark built from 1877-1881. It contains the single most important collection of 19th-century interiors to survive intact in one building. The medieval-inspired edifice now serves as a venue for educational programming and cultural events run by the Thompson Arts Center. It’s also the city’s premier alternative space for arts and performances.

Shopping in Uptown Manhattan

Many great shopping experiences await locals and visitors in Uptown Manhattan.

Herald Square is home to Macy's, the world's largest department store, made more popular by Thanksgiving parades. The 11-story flagship store occupies an entire city block, offering a first-class selection of top fashion and beauty brands, including Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, and Estee Lauder. Macy’s also carries a wide variety of housewares, gifts, and furniture.

An upscale shopping mall in Time Warner Center, The Shops at Columbus Circle is a prime NYC shopping destination offering a diverse selection of over 50 retail shops and boutiques housed in a grand, six-level retail complex with four floors built around a glass-walled atrium space overlooking Columbus Circle. It’s home to stores such as H&M, Cole Haan, Hugo Boss, J. Crew, Michael Kors, MAC Cosmetics, Sephora, and Swarovski.

Bloomingdale’s Upper West Side outlet features 25,000-square-feet and three levels of shopping spaces. The upscale department store’s outlet offers a wide variety of off-price apparel and accessories, including women’s RTW, shoes, men’s, children’s, fashion accessories, handbags, jewelry, and intimate apparel.
