Having a great facial appearance is more than just having a well-shaped nose, an angular jawline, or a strong chin. It’s the overall look that counts, and often this includes the overall look of the profile.
In ever increasing numbers, people are choosing combination facial surgery to improve not just one facial feature, but several. It’s all about the aesthetics and improvement of the nose-chin-cheek relationship made possible in a multiple procedure that many refer to as “profileplasty.” Here, the surgeon combines traditional rhinoplasty and chin surgery in an effort to create better symmetry to the facial profile of the patient.
What’s the point of having a near-perfect nose if the chin is weak or jutting? And vice-versa. Having a large nose or nose hump or bump can make an otherwise normal-looking chin appear off kilter. How does the jawline square with the chin and nose? Too much or too little of any one of these features can detract from the facial profile. For example, if your nose is a little on the large size, a weak chin can make it appear even larger. Add a little more prominence to the chin and that same nose is suddenly in balance with the face.
Creating Facial Harmony
Profileplasty is a dual procedure in which the surgeon works to resolve innate imbalances in the nose-chin-cheek relationship using a variety of surgical techniques. The patient, in consultation with the surgeon, may decide that nose surgery to reduce the length or size of the nose and a chin implant will yield optimal results. Or, very little nasal reshaping may be needed but a chin implant may be required to empower a weak chin or chin bone contouring to tone down an overpowering chin.
Facial implants are commonly used to add prominence to the chin; however, sliding genioplasty is another option whereby the chin is brought forward to correct any structural weakness or brought backward to correct a jutting chin bone. Meanwhile, nose surgery may require the filing down of a nasal hump or reducing the width of the nostrils for a more pleasing symmetry. In some cases, the procedure may only require nose surgery and less invasive chin contouring using dermal fillers or fat grafting.
Many surgeons and their patients like Profileplasty because, by combining procedures, it’s often less costly and more convenient than having the surgeries performed separately. There is only one recovery period involved and the risks of complications are cut in half.
If you have been unhappy about your overall facial appearance because something is out of balance, it may not be the shape or size of your nose that’s causing it. Your chin may need a bit of touching up or down to give you the complete and balanced result you’ve been yearning for.
Visualize Your Results
Profileplasty is a complicated procedure and one that requires a detailed consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon. Many practices now use 3D imaging software so the patient is now able to create a more balanced facial symmetry with recommendations from the surgeon.
