Recovering from Surgery at Home
Setting Up a Home Recovery Area
You’ve just gone through a complicated facelift procedure and now it’s time to go home and let the healing begin. Odds are you may be feeling groggy from the general anesthesia and beginning to experience varying degrees of pain or discomfort. Surgery is a traumatic thing to go through regardless of the medical or cosmetic procedure. Your body needs the time and opportunity to rest and recuperate so that the results of your facelift surgery are nothing less than spectacular.
Setting up a well-planned home recovery area is paramount to ensuring optimal results. In fact, the recovery area should be in place and equipped even before your surgery. Here are just a few tips and guidelines to keep in mind as you plan your personal home recovery room. It will become your home for several days, or weeks, depending on the extent of your surgical procedure.
First, prepare a bed with freshly washed sheets and blankets. The pillows should be clean and arranged so as to allow different head elevations and positions which may be necessary for a complete recovery. Your night stand should be organized and stocked with tissues, medications, toothpaste and brush, facial wipes, anti-perspirant, and any other toiletries that need to be kept close at hand.
If you plan to be in bed for days make sure the television is well positioned for easy viewing from a prone position. The remote control should be located within arm’s reach as well as a bell or buzzer should you require immediate help from a family member. Your cell phone should also be kept close by in case you need to call your plastic surgeon about any problems or complications which may develop during your recovery period. Having a smartphone will keep you connected to the Internet – and to your work, if necessary.
If you have pets make sure there is enough food and water in their bowls to last several days. Also, be sure you have enough food and snacks at bedside, including several bottles of water so you don’t become dehydrated. Lastly, make sure you have a sufficient supply of cold packs to reduce any swelling or inflammation near incision areas.
With proper forethought, planning on your part, and with guidance from a qualified plastic surgeon, home sweet home can become your home sweet recovery area for all the time that’s needed to ensure optimal results.
