Universities in New York City
A world-renowned city of innovation and home to a globally-recognized financial center, New York City best represents the ethos of the “American dream.” Gleaming skyscrapers and the energy emanating from this bustling metropolis seemingly create a signpost for new opportunities. And with its rich, diverse culture, New York City is one of the most student-preferred cities in the country offering first-class education.
Columbia University
Founded in 1754, Columbia University was known as King’s College and renamed Columbia College when it reopened in 1784 after the American Revolution. In 1912, the private institution became Columbia University. The 36-acre, Ivy League campus, exudes an urban setting and links its education and research to the vast resources of New York City. Its specialties include Climate Science, Engineering, Neuroscience, Arts, Law, Architecture, Business, Journalism, and Medicine.
New York University
New York University was chartered in 1831 by the New York State Legislature. It is one of the world’s foremost research universities and is a member of the selective Association of American Universities. The campus occupies over 171 buildings in the heart of Manhattan. NYU offers intimate undergraduate classes of 20 students or fewer and up to ten schools and prestigious programs, including the nationally-ranked Stern School of Business and the Silver School of Social Work. NYU receives the most applications of any private institution in the country.
Barnard College
Barnard College is a private institution founded in 1889 by Annie Nathan Meyer. It is an all-female college in Manhattan where students have access to two types of education –a small, private liberal arts school and a large, coeducational Ivy League institution, courtesy of a partnership with Columbia University. Barnard students can take classes, play sports, and join organizations at Columbia University, and Columbia students can have access to the same opportunities at Barnard.
Yeshiva University
Founded in 1886, Yeshiva University provides the highest quality Jewish and secular education of any Jewish university in the world. It has 4 New York City campuses: the Wilf Campus, Israel Henry Beren Campus, Brookdale Center, and Jack and Pearl Resnick Campus and is divided into three undergraduate colleges: Yeshiva College, the Stern College for Women, and the Sy Syms School of Business –which offer a dual curriculum comprising Jewish studies and liberal arts and sciences courses. Students also have the option to study in Israel in their first year.
The Juilliard School
Founded in 1905, The Juilliard School, formerly Juilliard School of Music, is a world leader in performing arts education. Located at Lincoln Center, The Julliard School is now the professional educational arm of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Its curriculum focuses exclusively on artistic education and offers bachelor’s degrees in music, dance, and drama, as well as postgraduate degrees in music.
